-Youth
Basketball League-
The
first Stanislaus-Modesto PAL Youth
Basketball League has concluded. The
league had over 215 boys and girls from
2nd grade through the 6th grade. The
players and their parents were very
happy with the organization of the
league including the team and individual
photos and the high quality uniforms
that the kids were able to keep. A big
Thank You goes out to Sports Program
Coordinator Randy Buchanon and his staff
of referees and site leaders.
On a very sad
note, the children of the local PAL
sports programs lost one of the most
committed and well liked members of
it's sports community when Head
Referee and overall great guy Jeff
Buchanon (pictured above) passed
away this month. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to his family and to
his extended family of kids that he
has touched.

Parks & Housing Authority Programs
The
weather was good and bad during the month of
February but we contiued to provide great programs
at the Parks and Housing Authority sites.
The Oregon Park
PAL program had a Valentines Day party with 18-20
children having goodies, refreshments, playing games and
having a great time! Oregon Park
kids are also practicing for an upcoming soccer
tournament at the park.

The Keyes PAL
site had a dance with 81 kids in attendance. They
enjoyed an evening of music, dancing and
refreshments.
Even during
this month of inconsistant weather, most sites had
an increase in attendance. The increase can be
attributed to the ability of the staff to have more
organized outdoor activities such as soccer,
basketball and football. While the younger children
enjoyed awesome arts and craft projects throughout
the month.

"PAL Kid of the Month"
Leo
Armienta-
17 year old senior at Patterson High School
Nominated for working hard at school and earned straight
A's on report card for first time. Some of his current
classes include: Accounting, Spanish 3, and Economics.
Plans after high school are to attend Modesto JC and
transfer to CSU Stan. Plans a majoring in Criminal
Justice and hopes to start a career as a probation
officer after he earns his degree.
Leo has moved out of town at an early age and family
returned to Grayson at age 11 and has attended the
Grayson PAL program since it opened (late 05, early
06). Leo takes a lot of responsibility in the center.
He likes going there because he knows he could get help
with his academics and he returns the favor by
volunteering his time to tutor and assist the younger
youths in the program. His favorite thing to do is play
sports with football being his overall favorite. When
asked what his favorite thing about the PAL program is
he said, "the people here" He knows that he can come to
the program and get what he needs. If he needs advice,
he comes to PAL; if he wants to play sports, PAL has
that taken care of as well; and when he needs help with
school work and projects, he knows exactly where to get
it. Leo said that he didn't think he would be where
he's at without the PAL program and the support he gets
from the PAL staff. I asked Leo what he has learned
from his experiences with the PAL program and he said he
learned to "give it all you got, and never quit"
Hugo
Camberos- 17 year
old senior at Patterson High School
Hugo originally started attending the program as a hired
tutor from the Patterson Unified School District. He
has done a great job while at the center, but due to
changes made, by the school district, Hugo was
reassigned to tutor at Grayson Charter School. However,
he still makes time almost daily to go to the center
after he's done with work and help out with PAL students
who are needing extra help. He also helps the staff
with things such as cleaning, decorating and tutoring.
Being one of the few "older" youths in the program, the
other kids look up to Hugo and get excited when he's
there to play.
Hugo is the 4th of 5 kids in his family and is
currently taking classes such as Pre-Calculus and
Drawing and Painting at PHS and plans to attend Modesto
JC in the fall. His goal is to become a certified
firefighter and Paramedic. I asked him why he continues
to come to the program and he said for the sports and
for the staff. Hugo stated that the thing about himself
that he likes the most is that he has a passion for
helping others.
Congratulations Leo & Hugo!!! |

Agnes
Baptist Elementary School
**Every
Monday
Matters** Agnes
Baptist Studies Gratitude and Appreciation
Agnes Baptist Elementary (Stanislaus Union School
District) piloted a program called Every Monday Matters
(EMM). EMM was created to give children the opportunity
to give back to their community by involving them in
activity-based learning. Students from Agnes Baptist
ASP learned how to give and receive gratitude and
appreciation in their school, homes, and communities.
Recreation leaders guided their students through
curriculum based on the book, "Every Monday Matters: 52
Ways to Make a Difference."
These curriculum lesions involved beneficial information
while incorporating the standards of gratitude and
appreciation, and empowering their to understand their
significance in making the world a better place.
The lesson began with understanding what gratitude and
appreciation was and what it feels like to be
appreciated. Once the students understood this concept,
they learned about what people do in our schools,
community, and even worldwide. Week one focused on
teachers and school staff. Students conducted
interviews with several teachers and one custodian. The
learned a deeper concept of their jobs and why they do
what they do. From there they brainstormed ways in
which they could show their gratitude and appreciation
for these individuals. The three weeks following
students learned lessons on U.S. Military men and women
and Police and Fire men and women. Students then made
cards and letters of appreciation. Beyond that, they
learned a deeper concept of why it is important to show
people gratitude.
Ending out this unit, a Modesto Police K-9 unit and a
truck from Fire Station 11 came to the After School
Program to do demonstrations with the students. The
students then presented these men and women with the
posters and cards of gratitude.

Underwater Classroom
During the first
couple of months of the 2009 year, students from
Agnes Baptist Elementary created an underwater
classroom. Students first learned about ocean such
as why the ocean is blue, why the ocean is salty,
what makes waves, and all about tsunamis. Since
then, students have been learning about a new sea
creature each day. They learned about the anatomy,
life span, diet, and history of each animal. After
their lesson, each student had the chance to
recreate the animal they learned about that day
during arts and crafts time. Students collectively
have created an underwater classroom by adding their
masterpieces each day. Now Agnes Baptist's room 20
us an underwater oasis of glitter, paper, tissue,
and paper plates all in the form of a real ocean.
The students have enjoyed this unit as much as they
love exploring their underwater classroom
everyday.
