            Housing Authority of Stanislaus County-
                       Stanislaus County PAL

           Westley Community Center
                       Tragedy

Excerpts taken from the Paterson Irrigator Newspaper:

Since 1991, the community center had been used by the Stanislaus County Police Activities League, mostly for its after-school program. According to Executive Director Alfredo Guerra, SCPAL would also use the building in conjunction with the county Housing Authority to help local adults fill out forms for housing and to give them other assistance. It was one of three such locations in the county, along with the community centers in Patterson and Oakdale. The county also used the center for summer day care and meal programs, and it was often used as a gathering place for neighborhood watch meetings and other community events. But the after-school program was the building's main draw. Guerra said that from 1 to 6 p.m. every weekday, the PAL would offer tutoring, recreational activities and arts and crafts for local students of all ages. There was also a lab with three computers. According to the PAL's Web site, the goal of the program is to reduce juvenile crime in migrant and low-income housing communities. The after-school program had been closed for the past two weeks for winter break, and it was scheduled to resume activities Monday. Instead, Guerra and the Housing Authority were left looking for a new location. Guerra said it's likely the program will temporarily move to some nearby units used during the summer to house migrant farm workers. He said that the move could be made as early as next week, though yet another spot will need to be found when those buildings are again in use. Regardless, Guerra said the fire caused a major loss for the community. "For teenagers in this area, this was the place for them," he said.

These events sometimes bring community members and partners together. With the support of The Community Hospice Hope Chest Stores, Stanislaus County, The 2008-2009 Leadership Modesto Class, The Housing Authority of Stanislaus County and others, the program was able to start up again on Monday January 26, 2009. below are some photos of some of the generous donations that were vital to the new beginning of the program.

WOW

WOW! What an exciting month both on the positive and negative side of the programs. We have talked at length above about the negatives and also the positives of the situation at the Westley Community Center. Now let's focus on the great things going on at our other Parks and Housing Authority sites: First of all a GREAT BIG PAL Welcome goes out to the new addition to the family of Irene Esparza from the Patterson Housing Authority site. The word is mom and baby are doing great. Our Patterson site had guest speaker Harold Mayberry from the San Mateo County Juvenile Hall to talk to the kids about what it is like to get into trouble and spend time in Juvenile Hall. Our Oakdale Housing Authority kids had a great time having a marathon tennis championship on January 16th and they having started a walking club to try to get our children more fit and taking advantage of the great outdoors. At Parklawn Park in Modesto the number of kids attending has increased recently. They are enjoying soccer, dodgeball and especially football games along with the younger children creating beautiful works of art during craft time. At Oregon Park and Salida Park, we have organized soccer tournaments with certificates, prizes, pizza and refreshments for the participants. Staff that work in the park programs have attended training on how to provide a fun and most important SAFE environment for the children. Below are some photos from the Salida Soccer Tournament.

            El Vista Elementary School
                   After School Program

Site Supervisor Elaine Phe states the following: From the moment I open my door, a new adventure begins momentarily as I hear the voices of my students from a distance shouting out my name..."Mrs. Elaine, Mrs. Elaine!" eagerly awaiting my acknowledgement. As I turn to wave hi, they too turn to tell a friend "She's my teacher form the after school program, cool huh?" El Vista's After School Program started in the Spring of 2007 where we strive and establish a place where students can experience the best and achieve confidence, courage and commitment in whatever goal they set to reach. One obstacle that we have been faced with is the Budget Freeze. Yes, I'm sure we all know how difficult it may be, yet our students won't let the budget freeze prevent them from enjoying what they love to do best. Have Fun! Club Friday is our biggest hit of all, it has our attendance at it's peak and no student wants to be left behind. In addition to our Movie, Sports, Scrap Booking, Arts and Crafts and Cooking, we have also developed two new clubs: Technology Club and the Recycling Club. As for the Technology Club, our Site Coordinator, Jerry Carreno has brought in his own personal XBOX for Dance Revolution. The students have also combined their own personal equipment for our program to ensure that the clubs stay open. Furthermaore, our Recycling Club has produced their own paper from used and unwanted paper. Not only have they tried to make the best of what they have, but they they too have incorporated the school faculty to join them as they become young leaders making a difference in today. The students not only benefit from the various activities such as snack, homework help, Sparks and academic enrichment but Jerry, Jessica, Laura, Yovanna and Melissa, the crew members, assist them with their very own building block. They lead students and encourage them to take on their very own path, keeping them from becoming the typical stereotyped students and becoming their own unique and individual person. How is that offered at El Vista's After Scholl Program? The secret behind our special recipe is quite simple! It is something that doesn't have to be given a designated time in the day. What is it? It's the experience the students receive between themselves and the other students around them including the relationship with our wonderful staff. We also have a very supportive principak, Mrs. Marilyn Rockey, who without her help, we could not make our program a success! The determination and dedication we display inspire students to be not just great but to be EXTRAORDINARY kids!

Youth Basketball League- This league is offered to children from grades 2nd through 6th from throughout Modesto. The games are held at La Loma Junior High School located at 1800 Encina Avenue, Modesto, CA and Standiford Elementary School located at 605 Tokay Avenue Modesto, CA on Saturdays for the next several weeks. The league is well under way with over 215 children taking advantage of this well organized league. The league is a great environment for learning teamwork, respect and the fundamentals of basketball. The children are exposed to a very positive environment where they are getting off of the couch and away form the video games to enjoy a Saturday of excellent physical activity. Thanks goes out to Stanislaus-Modesto PAL Sports Program Coordinator Randy Buchanan and his crew for doing a great job with the league.

For information regarding the basketball league, please contact Randy Buchanan at (209) 529-9121.
